Essential Question: What do we need to do to create an effective program?
We will need a coordinator for each Grade Level Team. Will this be a paid position?
What would the intervention be like? James will talk about this.
Community Involvement. Will the Community members sign off students?
The structure, what does it look like. TJ you have 12-15 kids your are assigned to for the 4 years. Coordinator would distribute the materials.
Clarify-Kuder would give much of this material
Does this count as Academic Instruction time?
WTVL had 20 minute sessions, no coordinator. Following year had a director. Took 4 years for the students to be a group.
WTVL, my daughter is there if you do not have a structure to build off. Small group activities need to be coordinated. How do we strategically make a group? You have different goals for the students.
If we are going to do it right, not just wing it, we must have structure!
Did the coordinators also teach a class? The prep for this is substantial!!!!!
Maranakook has this program and it is a benefit. There has to be some kind of mechanism for students to move out of the group when the dynamics do not work (Students-student, Teacher-student, etc.) Students were allowed to evaluate how things were going and kids were given some say.)
Carrabec, the position was a stipend position. Folks met in the summer
Same teacher for all 4 years....This is a step outside of the teacm concept. Seems like it is outside of the team concept.
Is this implemented all at once or do we start with Freshmen and then move up through the years. TJ's personal opinion is to move year by year.
What do you do with the upper classroom? Interventions for 10, 11, 12. times to meet with the students during the day.
There are huge possibilities but we need to think through the nuts and bolts. They must have something concrete to do.
If we did teaming at upper level it would be a great time for Guidance to come in and do there thing. SAT preps, etc.
What about training for teachers? Training in Teaming, Interventions, Differentiation. The training must and needs to happen before this goes in place.
You keep saying we need to make decisions about this. When are we going to have the time to make the decisions or plan for this change?
This is not going to implemented until the following year. You have to do for everyone because we will have the 40 minute block we need to plan for.
Will students have to make a serious commitment or will they be able to drop in and drop out? (attendance)
Will this happen once a week, two, etc? How often? TJ believes it could be once a week until it could be defined better.
Will the Career Pathway (Vocational) be able to start sooner. Will we be able to open Vocational sooner?
I wonder if the teachers in this building will have the opportunity to own the 40 minute and will they have a chance to take ownership and build the Intervention together. Build it year 2. Teaming is effecting the whole school we all need time to plan it and do it right.
We need to put some time into teaching test taking strategies. (Drive up SATS with test taking strategies)
The one thing I got out of Thaddeus's presentation was the last few slides where the students we think should be doing well are not doing so well. The intervention component of this project is probably the most important (40 minutes everyday where students must find teachers and get help. Build relationships etc. A lot of our students do not think we value what they know or care what happens to htem. Most importantly we are not meeting the needs of students we think we meeting the needs for.
One group at a time.
How will we schedule this? I can not see how this will work?
To be frank I have a lot of kids who are juniors and seniors who say they were not challenged in Middle School and it continues on. We are not challenging because we have to teach t the middle. We are going to need a lot of training if we are going in this direction.
If we are looking at the performance of students and they are not meeting the standard and we are using SAT as a measure. Truthfully if we concentrate on the education of students in this area (require a year long SAT prep course)
Will we have anything in place for studnets who are meeting the standard? Give kids an incentive to do things they wnat to do.
If students did not need intervention in Searsport they had enrichment activities.
Intervention Activity Period was at Marranacook. There will need to be accountablity and structure to this or kids will be all over the place. Administratros must be involved maybe even teach a class.
For Advisor /Advisse I would like to see some real world activities.
We are saying Teaming is a given but it is not it has not gone to the board but I would like to make sure something like this DOES happen to make a difference.
I think for advisee advisor progarms to be valuable we must invest ourselves in it.
